Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward a catalogue entry of 9,496 lowland breeding sheep and breeding rams at their special sale at Longtown on Tuesday 12th September 2017.

A catalogue entry of 4,652 of Greyface Mule ewe lambs was forward at the Annual Show and Sale, which was sponsored by Roxan Tags & Livestock Identification. All lambs were turned out in great bloom and condition and credit must go to all vendors showing, however lambs in general would be smaller than last year owing to the very wet summer, nevertheless buyers were present from Aberdeen down to Devon and Cornwall. Trade was brisk throughout with averages unchanged on the year.

Ex Blackface Ewe

1st & Champion – A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill, Bewcastle, sold at £135 and, also had the top average of today of £109.12.

2nd – J Anderson & Partners, Rowanburnfoot, Canonbie, sold at £116

3rd – Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston, sold at £110

Ex Swaledale Ewe

1st – JT James, Midtodhills, Roadhead, sold at £120

2nd – RI & VA Telford, High Parkfoot, Roadhead, sold at £115

3rd – K Hall, Baggarah Farm, Brampton, sold at £105

Other prices out with the show was £122 (x2) Peela Hill, £120 Lawston, £115 The Nook (Forster) and Hill Brae, £110 Wanwood Hill, £102 Sourhope.

Another nice show of 1,390 shearlings were forward to a select ring of buyers with Mule shearlings very sticky to cash but Cheviot Mule and Texel or Suffolk x meeting a fast selling trade. The section topped at £172 for a pen of outstanding Texel shearlings from Messrs Graham, Upper Mains and selling to Messrs Steeples, Nottingham. Cheviot Mules topped at £155 from the same home selling to Messrs Porteous, Penlaw, with Mules to £126 from Hillbrae and Englishtown.

The 2nd sale of 1,481 Cheviot Mule ewe lambs continued in the same vein as the main sale with demand outstripping supply and all types easily sold to a top of £122 from Messrs Sloan, Piel View to Messrs Bonsall, Slindon.

A strong show of 1,168 ewes of all ages met an animated trade and were considerably easier to sell than of late, topping at £122 for Texels from Messrs Corrie, Eskdaill Street.

The evening sale of 188 rams and females of all classes met a good selling trade to a busy ring of buyers. Quality lots were easily sold and more could have been sold to advantage. The lesser end met realization but found new homes none the less.

The sale topped at £650 for a Suffolk shearling from Messrs Douglas, Catslackburn then at £500 on five separate occasions. Firstly, for Texel shearlings from Catslackburn and Dashwell to Messrs Almack and Peela Hill respectively. Then for Beltex and Beltex x Texel shearlings from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside to Tara and Shancastle. Blue Faced Leicester two shears to £500 from K Hall, Baggarah to Riggshields, and also to £500 for a Blue Faced Leicester gimmer shearling from Messrs Walton, Penpeugh to Messrs Anderson, Rowanburnfoot.
