Longtown Ladies

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held its 4th annual "Longtown Ladies" sale of in lamb females and geld hoggs, on Tuesday 16th January 2018 with a catalogued entry of 191 head, comprising of 131 Texels, 13 Dutch Texel, 9 Beltex, 20 Texel x Beltex and 18 Bluefaced Leicester.

Even owing to the adverse weather conditions north of the border, all vendors made it to the sale and with a large ring of local and distant buyers, trade was strong from start to finish especially for character lots, with the centre record broken three times in one evening and with fifteen lots selling at or above 1,000gns., with the sale averaging 550gns overall.

The highlight of the sale was the number two gimmer from Steven Renwick’s Craig Douglas flock at Peebles, which was also awarded the Championship at the pre-sale show where a strong class of twenty gimmers were presented to and ably placed by the judge Mr T Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie.

This Haddo Whiskey Galore daughter sold carrying a pair to the much admired Mullan Amigo, and went on to create a new centre record of 5,200gns and after some spirited bidding found a new home with Bruce Renwick’s Castlecairn flock, Kelso.

Mr Renwick was again in the money with his first gimmer which stood 4th in the show. By the same sire as the Champion; this one carrying a single, realised 3,800gns and was again purchased by Bruce Renwick for his Castlecairn flock.

At 3,000gns was the first from the Ettrick pen of Gordon and David Gray, this Tullagh Saracen daughter sold carrying a single to Usk Vale Albatross and found a new home with Messrs Redpath, Berrymoss, Kelso.

The Craig Douglas flock was again in the money when his last gimmer realised 2,000gns, carrying a pair to Mullan Amigo and by that good Haddo Whiskey Galore sire, she found a new home with Messrs Jones, Ynystoddeb, Carmarthen.

Then at 1,500gns the Reserve Champion from Messrs Spyrou, Gib Farm, which found a new home with Messrs Woodmass, Harene, Linstock. Sired by Hexel Wildcard, this full sister to last weeks Beeston Castle Champion (4,100gns) sold carrying a pair to the renown Anglezark Uno.

Robbie Wilson’s Milnbank flock from Turriff also commanded a steady trade selling to 1,200gns for a Glenside Willy Nilly daughter carrying a pair to Strathbogie Yes Sir and going home with Messrs Davies for his Telo flock in Llandeilo.

Closely followed at 1,150gns, another Wily Nilly daughter sold carrying a single to Greenstar Alfie, which headed home with Messrs Mackinnon, Walterstead Farm Cottage, Ladykirk.  

Ettrick then sold their second by Shannagh Won-O-Won for 1,100gns in lamb to Usk Vale Albatross. She found a new home with Messrs Murray, Cross House, Hexham.

A further five lots of Texel gimmers sold at the 1,000gns mark, with a pair from Glenside selling to Messrs Lodge, Heyworth Lodge and A Hamilton for his Smyllum flock respectively. Then another brace from Robbie Wilson’s Milnbank flock sold to Messrs Delaney, Creemully, County Roscommon, Ireland and Messrs Lodge, Heyworth Logde.

Finally, Messrs Laird, Cambwell sold his late entry by Hilltop Valhalla, carrying a single to Cambwell Arisotocrat and selling to Messrs Richardson’s Stonebridge flock.

In other sections, Dutch Texels topped at 1,000gns twice from Messrs Pyman, Thacka selling to Messrs Wilkinson, Arkleby House and Mr S Dalton, Greenside respectively. Mr Pyman also sold one at 700gns and two at 680gns.

Beltex gimmers sold to 500gns from Messrs Struthers, Greenbank to Evans Bros.

Beltex x Texel gimmers sold to 320gns and 300gns from Maidencots, 300gns from The Firs and 300gns twice from Uppercleuch.

In the Bluefaced Leicester’s, the sale topped at 900gns from the Midlock pen. This shearling by F27 Midlock sold carrying triplets to J6 Hewgill and headed across the water to Messrs Mullins, Corlacky Hill, Swatragh.

At 700gns Messrs Lawson, Hundith sold an in lamb hogg by D17 Smearsett, she sold carrying a single to K8 Shafthill and headed home with Messrs Scrimgeour, Raise Lodge.

The at 600gns Midlock sold a H1 Kirby Redgate daughter carrying a single to J6 Hewgill, finding a new home with Messrs Nisbet, Sorn Mains, Sorn.
