Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd presented 9,545 store lambs and feeding ewes at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 24th September 2019.

It was the main prize show and sale of Blackface lambs, where there was an outstanding entry of 3,328. A very good show and buyers from as far as Devon endured a great trade, with many pens over £50 to a top of £58.50 for a superb pen from Roman Wall breeders H & H Robson, Townshields. Overall trade would be similar on the year.

Father and son team Phil & Bob Stubbs from Cheshire were the master judges, whose awards were as follows;

1st - Messrs Weatherson, Edges Green, Haltwhistle - £50.50
2nd – H & H Robson, Townshields, Haydon Bridge - £58.50
3rd - Mrs Hanbury, Lamperts, Gilsland - £53

Others to £52.50 Haliburton, £49 Laverhay, £47 Sundhope, £46.50 Earlshaugh & Bowan Hill & Embley.

A nice show of 1,862 Cheviots were not as good show for quality, best lambs just as dear, with others slightly easier. Top £55.50 Enzieholm, £54 Toftholm & Glendinning, £53.50 Carlenrigg, £51.50 Cossar Hill.

There was a large show of other lambs with many travelled buyers present. Trade was slightly cheaper due to the depressed prime market, long keep lambs just as dear. Top £68.50 & £65 & £64 for Suffolk x from Routin Lynn, others to £63.50 & £62.50 Twislehope; Texels to £66.50 Routin Lynn, £66 Hazelbank & Longformacus, £65.50 Aldery Terrace & £65 East Foreshield & Berry Home; Rouge to £65 Lochwood Mains; Beltex to £65 Winterhope, £63 Sorbies; Cheviot Mules to £65 Viewly Farm; Greyfaces to £64 Clarghyll, £56 Sunnyside, £54.50 & £54 Tecket; Charollais to £54.50 Stonehouse; Swaledales to £40 & £32 East Stobbylea; Herdwicks to £40 Ragithwhaite.

A large show of feeding ewes, sold very well with a top of £64.50 for Texels from Waterhead of Dryfe, others to £63 Escart. Hill ewes to £43.50 for Blackfaces from Tayvallich Estate, Cheviots to £43 Powisholm.
