Longtown Border Ewe Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their Annual Border Cheviot ewe sale, together with horned sheep, where there was forward a catalogue entry of 8,159 on Wednesday 2nd October 2019 at Longtown.

With a massive ringside of buyers from all over the UK were present, a very good show of both North and South Country Cheviots and vendors must be complimented on the quality and condition of the sheep. Trade was very dear for all North Country Cheviots. South Cheviots saw character lots easily sold with others slightly less.

North Country Cheviots to a top of £160 & £145 for ewes from Orthwaite Hall, others to £145 & £120 Hilltop, £122 Kinaldy. Gimmers to £152 Hownam Grange, others to £150 Longburgh Fauld, £148 Maidencots, £140 Pastures View & Westhills. Ewe lambs to £180 from Kinaldy, others to £175 North Synton.

South Country Cheviots to a top of £150 for Gimmers from Hindhope (Elliot), others to £142 & £130 Stirkfield Farms, £140 Mount Benger, £125 Crailloch. Ewe lambs to £110 Crailloch, others to £105 Catslackburn, £100 Stirkfield Farms & Castle Crawford. Included in the sale was a dispersal of 350 from Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm, Low Row, whose top was £115 for gimmers, to average £80.03.

Blackface ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs sold to an animated demand, with all sections being considerably dearer on the year. Many Welsh and Southern buyers in attendance. Blackface gimmers sold to a top of £158 for a pen from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, others to £145 Sewing Shields, £135 Toft House, The Side & Wanwood Hill, £130 Craigieburn & Sewing Shields. Ewe lambs to £78 from Wanwood Hill & Allensgreen, £72 Laverhay. Ewes to £82 Brewery House Barn, £78 Cademuir & The Stobbs, £75 Laverhay, £70 Brewery House Barn, £68 Westerhall & Blackburn.

Included in the sale was the show for North of England type Blackfaces on behalf of the North of England Blackface Sheep Breeders Association. Results are as follows;

The North Country Cheviot Sheep Society show and sale of rams was held at Longtown on Wednesday in conjunction with the annual Border Ewe Sale.

An exceptional show of Park shearlings were forward and met a strong commercial trade with 102 levelling to average £388, up £42 on the year.  Overall 131 Cheviot rams of all ages averaged £340, similar to last year`­s figure.

Leading the field were J. Runciman and Sons, Allanshaws with their 4th prize son of Humbleheugh Topgun which made £1,050 to Messrs Beard, Dormansteads, Roweltown.  Allanshaws followed this with three £1,000 sales, two going to Grain Farms, Hebden Bridge and the other to R.R.J. Weir, Chapel House, Stonethwaite, Keswick.  With another at £700, Allanshaws averaged £721 for nine.

The judge, Aled Jones from Llangollen found his champion in the North Synton pen of Messrs Davies.  A son of Synton Warrior, he went at £650 to C. Anderson, Dunterley, Bellingham.  North Synton had others at £650, £620 and £600.

£900 was paid by T.W. & T.B. Edgar, Whitton to J.H. Strawhorn & Sons, Broomhillbank, Lockerbie for a ram sired by Synton Toronto.  D. Matthewson, Soutra sold at £700 with Peter Hedley`s second prizewinner from Swinside Townfoot making £680.  Steven Turnbull`s Jethart flock topped at £650 and £580 with C.R. Graham & Sons, Carruthers selling up to £600 and £580 and Kinaldy to £550. Hill rams met a more modest demand topping at £350 for the first prizewinner from W.N. Douglas, Whitehope.

Champion Bluefaced Leicester from Messrs Hewson Burgh Head sold for £420

At their annual sale of Traditional Bluefaced Leicester rams, held to coincide with the Border Cheviot Ewe Sale, C & D Auction Marts of Longtown sold 94 with shearlings averaging £332 for a mixed quality show.  R. McClymont & Sons, Kirksteads, Yarrow led the sale with rams at £900, to M. Ratcliffe, Fell Gate, High Casterton and £750 to W. Dunlop & Son, Commonside, Hawick.  Another from Kirksteads went to S. R. Crossland, Nottingham at £700 with three others in the pen at over £500 and a flock average of £653.  The champion, from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head came in at £420 to D. Wilson & Son, Marwhirn with others at £480 Preston Mains, £480 Lowes Fell, £420 Terrona, £420 Raggetsyke and £420 Whinny Hall.  At £400 were Westend, Threepwood Cottage, Preston Mains and Greenfield View.
