Longtown Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auctions Marts held their annual special sale of lowland breeding sheep on Wednesday 1st September 2021.

A fantastic entry of breeding sheep met a very keen demand, with customers galore from Devon to Orkney, looking for quality sheep with stretch and power. The sale was led at £320 apiece for four outstanding Beltex x Charollais gimmers from R & M Paterson, Upper Auchenlay, who sold others at £300 and £280. Followed closely by J & C Hastings, Kilncroft who sold pure Texels to £300 and £250.

Incorporated in the sale was the annual special prize show and sale of North of England Mules, Scotch Mules and Texel x gimmers. The show was ably judged by Stuart Runciman, Elmbank, whose awards were as follows;

Also included in today’s sale was two quality dispersals from Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green and Messrs Squair, Lower Killernie, with both consignments being turned out to perfection, a testament to their stockmanship.

The Dashwell Green run of sheep met huge demand selling two shears at £220, three shears at £192, four and five shears at £164, tups to £380, with the complete run of Texel x ewes averaging £178.

The Lower Killernie sheep again met a huge demand with Texel gimmers to £210, Dutch Texel gimmers to £200 and Beltex gimmers to £210. Dutch Texel ewes sold to £190 and Texel ewes to £180. Beltex tups to £580 x2 and Texel tups to £480.
