Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 9,784 store lambs and feeding ewes (including special show and sale of Cheviots and Blackface) at Longtown at their weekly sale on Tuesday 19th October 2021.

A large entry of lambs, although quality not as good, usual large company of buyers present trade was the best so far with prices remaining level all day.

Top £115 for Texels from Killervan, Argyll and Gillalees, others £111 Mount Benger and Carrowbrough. Beltex’s to £111 Westerhall, £107 White Hurworth & Yeavering Cottage. Suffolks to £105 Meikle Whitriggs, £99 High House (Noble), £96 Studfold and £95 Edgerston Trading. Charollais to £115 Meikle Whitriggs. Greyface to £97 West Deanraw, £87 Upper Burnmouth and £86 Low Stokoe. Cheviot Mule to £108 Edgerston Trading. Leicester to £100 Gyhll Brae. Dorsets to £93 High Crubasdale. Feeding ewes (716) a very strong trade. Top £89 for Texels from The Dykes and Comlongon Mains. Suffolks to £83 Muirfield. Greyfaces to £75 Comlongon Mains and £74 Waterhead of Dryfe. Hill ewes £77 for cheviots from Beachmenach and £74 Meikle Whitriggs. Swaledales to £69 Milescott. Blackfaces to £48.50 Beachmenach. Lleyn to £66 Dolphinston. Cast rams to £147 and £112 from Texels from Carrowbrough.

It was the annual show and sale of Hill Cheviots and Blackfaces, an outstanding show of both was very ably judged by Mr Andrew Reid, Glendearg Farm, Eskdalemuir whose awards were as follows.

Pen of Blackface lambs:

Pen of South Country Cheviots lambs:

1st – Halliday, Granton £92.50

2nd – E&L Farming, Cooms £92.50

Hill cheviots (2521) A top quality entry and easily the best trade this year. Top £95.50 for Hill Northies from Blakehope others to £90 Gillesbie Farm. Hill cheviots to £93.50 Mount Benger and £92.50 Cooms and Granton.

Blackface (2982) a very large entry and a quality show trade again was the best of the season. Top £9750 from Horseholm and £97 Raeshaw Farm and £93.50 Drumlanrigg Mains and £92 Townshield.

Breeding Rams

An end of season sale of 150 rams of all classes on Tuesday 19th October, sold to a strong ringside of buyers. Quality tups sold to an animated demand topping at £650 for a Texel shearling from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick, who sold others at £520. Hill North Country Cheviot two shear rams were in serious demand selling to £550 and £450 from Floor Farming, Rawburn. Ram lambs sold to £500 and £400 from regular supporters Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head, Carlisle.
