Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their weekly sale of 9,313 store lambs and feeding ewes at Longtown on Tuesday 20th September 2022.

Another large entry attracted more buyers from Wales. Trade was similar all round, although smaller, poorer bred lambs were much harder to sell.

Top £107 for Cheviot tup lambs from The Bloch and Texels to £107 East Foreshields, others to £101 Felton Demense & Allensgreen; Beltex to £100 Yeavering Cottage; Suffolks to £91 Easter Alemoor, £90 West Linkhall; Half-Breds to £97 & £93 Pilmuir; Greyfaces to £91 Smiddy Hill, £90 Gillalees, £87 Mains; Cheviot Mules to £97 & £93 Kirkhouse; Lleyns to £70 Ravenscleugh; Charollais to £81 Monk; Swaledales to £40 East Stobbylea.

Feeding ewes (201) in strong demand. Top £110 for Beltex from Yeavering Cottage; Cheviots Mules to £86 Longformacus; Greyfaces to £73 Mosspetrol. Hill ewes to £71 for Cheviots from The Bloch; Blackfaces to £50 Yeavering Cottage.

It was the prize show and sale of Blackface store lambs, where there was a good entry of 2,408. Trade can only be described as very satisfactory. Judging was ably carried out by Mr Eddie Eastham, Burgh by Sands, whose awards were as follows:

1st - Murray, West Deanraw - £85
2nd - Walton, Allensgreen - £87
3rd - Manning, Earlshaugh - £74

Other top prices were £84 Townshields, £82 Edgesgreen & Lanehead, £80 Edgesgreen & Glenreasdale.

2,363 Cheviots were forward in smaller numbers, plenty of buyers operating, trade was similar. Top £87 for Hill Northies from Effgill, £82 Raeburnfoot, £81 Upper Chatto, £80 Clerk Hill. Hill Cheviots to £84 (x2) Glendinning & Priesthaugh, £79 Crossdykes & Skelfhill, £78 Sundhope.
