LONGTOWN LADIES TO 5,500 GUINEAS

The ninth annual “Longtown Ladies” sale of pedigree Texel and Dutch Texel breeding females was held on Monday evening, 9th January.  There was a high quality entry which attracted much interest, both in the mart and on-line, and an absolutely packed ringside witnessed a strong trade throughout.

113 Texel gimmer shearlings sold to average £936 with 30 ewe hoggs levelling at £796. 31 sheep sold for 1,000 guineas or more.

Sportsmans Double Diamond shearling

Lot 58 Sportsmans Double Diamond shearling - 5,500gns

Alan Blackwood of Auldhouseburn led the sale with a 5,500gns shearling by Sportsmans Double Diamond out of a Rhaeadr Best of the Best dam and in-lamb to Auldhouseburn Finbars Fury. She went to Banchory, to Nicola Howie of Cairnton Farm. With the 3,200 gns sale of another Double Diamond daughter, to Paul Swindell, Royal Texels, Auldhouseburn saw their consignment average £3,400.

Usk Vale Pedigrees shearling

Lot 64 Usk Vale Pedigrees shearling - 4,500gns

Usk Vale Pedigrees again repaid their long trip from Llandrindod Wells with the 4,500gns sale of  a Teiglum Cinnamon shearling, from a Hexel Born to be Wild ewe and in-lamb to Glenside Fortune, She went back to Wales, to W. Thomas, Greynor Isaf, Tycroes.  Usk Vale also sold a Sportsmans Chieftain daughter at 3,400gns to Barry Farrell, Oberstown, County Meath and, with sales at 2,000gns and 1,900gns, their pen average was £2,050.

Sportsmans Dirty Harry shearling

Lot 42 Sportsmans Dirty Harry shearling - 4,500gns

First time consignors Bruce Renwick & family were rewarded with a 4,500gns sale for a Sportsmans Dirty Harry shearling purchased by Jonny Cubbitt, Ballymena. In-lamb to Haymount Foremost, she was from a Strathbogie Your Tupped dam. Castlecairn had other sales to 2,200gns and levelled at £1,800.

Robert Cockburn`s Knap entry from Crieff made to 3,800gns for a daughter of Sportsmans Deal Breaker bought by A. Hambleton, Merkland, Thornhill and, with other sales to 1,900gns, Mr Cockburn`s pen averaged £1,875.

2,200gns sales were made by Gordon Gray, Ettrick and Messrs McGregor, Allanfauld. Selling at 2,000gns, the champion in the show, sponsored by William Armstrong Transport was a Knock Dalwhinnie shearling, in-lamb to Plasucha Fireball from Kenny Pratt`s Aberdeenshire based Hilltop flock. She  went to the judge, Caroline Morton, Halbeath. Mr Pratt had another at 2,000gns, as did Gordon Gray.  Also at 2,000gns was the top-seller from the sale of the entire shearling crop of the Knockem flock of Charlotte and James Nicholson, Duns. This smart consignment all met strong demand and averaged £695 for 22 head.

There was tremendous demand for the best quality geld ewe hoggs with Michael Turner, Okehall, Staffordshire selling a Glenside Drum Major daughter to Alan Glendinning, Tobermore for 2,000gns with other sales at 1,800gns and 1,200gns, the latter for the sale reserve champion, another Drum Major daughter. The Okehall hoggs averaged 1,500gns.

J. & H. Clark, Garngour, Leshmahagow sold ewe hoggs for 1,500gns and 1,200gns and Drumbreddan sold these to 1,000gns.

The good annual consignments of Dutch Texel gimmers met their usual consistent trade to average £513 for fifteen, selling to 850gns from Messrs Pyman`s Thacka Flock from Stainton, Penrith and 700gns (twice) from Oliver Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton.

A consignment of Dutch Spotted cross ewe hoggs for Ali Jackson`s Tiptop Pedigrees met great demand, sold to a  top of 400gns twice and averaged £322 for sixteen.
