Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 3,296 store hoggs, feeding ewes and cast rams at Longtown on Tuesday 21st March 2023. A similar entry of hoggs, attracted more buyers, trade was dearer on the week, many more could easily been sold to advantage.

Included in the sale was the annual consignment of 500 Hill North Country Cheviot hoggs from Neil Robertson, Kilfinnan, Spean Bridge, which were of the usual high standard. His top was £93 and £92 for Hill North Cheviot and £69 for North Cheviot Shetland cross.

A very mixed show of ewes with lambs at foot met a very strong enquiry for the quality on offer, with huge premiums being paid for outfits with stronger lambs. Selling to a top of £110 per life for a Dorset ewes with strong twin lambs (£330 an outfit) from E Lawson, East Mains. A run of Swaledale ewe hoggs from J Casey, High Dunashery, Argyll met spirited bidding from many local and travelled customers, to a top of £116, with others at £115, £113, £112 and £108; Texel ewe hoggs selling at £129 and Mules to £111.
