Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 8,599 store lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 5th September 2023.

A large show attracted both local and distant buyers, trade was again strong with late high rates easily maintained.

Top £115 & £110 for Texels from Hole Farm, Hamsterley, £109 Routin Lynn, £108 Priesthaugh, £107 Harwood House; Beltex to £104.50 & £103 Sorbie; Suffolks to £101 Priesthaugh & Tarrasfoot, £97 Philiphaugh Estate & Englishtown; Greyfaces to £93 Gibblaston, £91 Home Farm, Kilberry, £89 Auchaleek, £88 Silloans & Viewley; Cheviot Mules to £90 Annandale Estate, £88 Philiphaugh Estate; Millennium Bleu to £80 Brackenbank; Swaledales to £42 Laverhay; Herdwicks to £77 Low Longlands, £75 Orthwaite Hall.

Feeding ewes (549) a large show, trade very good. Top £135 for Texels from Kilmichael; Cheviots to £94 Ballagan; Leicesters to £114 Kilmichael; Greyfaces to £82 Somerville. Hill ewes to £72 for Blackfaces from Kilmichael, Herdwicks to £52 Low Longlands. Cast rams to £220 for a Texel from Tarrasfoot.

At the first special sale of Hill Cheviots, there was an entry of 1,174, trade for strong Cheviots very good at similar rates to last year. Top lots sold to £81 Glendinning, others to £79 Dodd & Effgill, £78 The Cooms for a pen of 209.

Also was the first sale of Blackfaces, there was an increased entry of 1,627, buyers again strong for top lambs although smaller lambs looked dear. Top £75 for a pen from Henderland, others to £70 Kilmichael & Raeshaw Farms.
