Longtown Annual Show & Sale of Cheviot Mules
Longtown Auction Mart held their annual sale of 10,481 Cheviot Mule and Cheviot Mule bred offspring on Tuesday 26th August 2025.
The sale was kindly sponsored by Tarff Agricultural Merchants.
First of all the directors, auctioneers and all the staff at C&D Marts thank both purchasers and vendors alike for their cooperation, as this year, the sale was forced to split to two different venues on the same day. Your support, time and custom is most definitely appreciated.
The first sale was held at Dumfries Auction which flowed very well resulting in a very buoyant trade with all averages up across the board. Cheviot Mule gimmer shearlings were the trade of the day being £38 up on the year. Topping the sale were regular consigners Robert and Hazel McNee who made the trip down from Over Finlarg, Dundee to grab top honours topping at an eye watering £390 for a pen of 20 of the finest bred gimmer shearlings you will see this back end, the second pen from this good home weren’t to far behind realising £370. Robert and Hazel sold a total of 192 Gimmers to average a staggering £344.
Within the gimmer section there were two outstanding gimmers put up for sale on behalf of Cancer Research. These two gimmers were kindly donated by M/s Thomson, Hownam Grange and Mr D Lynn, Northway respectfully. The first gimmer sold for £500 to A. & R. Retson, the second gimmer sold twice. Firstly for £600 being bought by Stuart Thomson whom very kindly put it back up for sale which then sold for £550 being bought by A. & R. Retson who goes home with both gimmers. For all of those involved the directors and auctioneers congratulate you on your kind generosity as just over £1,750 was raised in total. Very well done!

The Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs were next to follow and boy did they not disappoint. All averages were up on last years record breaking prices and this section was no different. Topping the sale was the Hedley family from Swinside who again topped the sale with both price per head and averages. Peter, Vicky and William were floating round the ring as 2 of their top 6 pens soared above £300 barrier topping at an eye watering £325 for a pen of 20.
Running lambs met some resistance for obviously the distinct lack of grass in southern counties which in turn left running lambs slightly harder to place than the stronger tupping types.
