The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 12 prime cattle, 0 young bulls, 0 over thirty month cattle, 6,241 prime lambs and 4,526 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Saturday 27th December 2014.
Only a small show of 12 prime cattle and well short of requirements with trade very dear. Top price to 233.5p and 232.5p for Limousin heifers both shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen. Limousin bullocks sold to 217.5p from W.H. & M. Sisson, Fenton Farm.

Another great show of 6,241 prime lambs forward to a full ring of buyers busy for sheep. All classes of lambs were dearer on the week, especially export and lightweight lambs. 44-48 kilos saw a big rise on the week, with 50 kilo plus lambs maintaining recent high rates. The sale averaged 188.3p/kg (SQQ 191.7p), up 10p on the week. Top price of 265p per kilo for Texels from Killocraw, Campbeltown and to £111 per head for Texels from Hyde Park.

A good show of 4,526 cast ewes and rams were forward to a full ring of buyers all keen for sheep. Ewes remain short of requirements across the board and don’t look like being in any surplus numbers for a while. The sale would be a few pounds cheaper for heavy ewes after last week’s bonanza, with lightweight ewes remaining similar. The sale was topped at £164 for a Suffolk ram from Westside. Texel ewe to £146 from Felltop. Blackface ewes to £96 from Quarry House.
