Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 prime cattle, 28 OTM cattle, 4,756 prime lambs and 4,813 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th November 2015.

A small show of prime cattle but trade very dear and many more are needed to satisfy demands. The sale topped at 215.5p for a Limousin bullock from J.F. & I. Armstrong, Nether Onsett bought by Mr G. Moor, others to 210.5p also from Messrs Armstrong, purchased by Mr S. Ramsey.

OTMS – Peter Dayson retains top spot!

Another strong entry were on offer to a good company of buyers with new faces of last week making a welcome return. All types of cows were present with a large percentage of hill sucklers forward, but as ever all classes met a splendid trade. The sale was topped by an Angus cow from regular Peter Dayson, which sold to 152p. Hill Angus sold to 110p from Brian Urwin who’s run of cows averaged 106p. British Blue x Friesian cows sold to 112p from Messrs Grieve, with Dun Galloway from Allan Maxwell realising 102p. Dairy cows a better quality selection on the week selling to 121p from Messrs Cowans for Holsteins, traditional Friesian sold to 109p from Robert Byers, with others at 107p Malcolm Dodd. Dick Wigham had an old Friesian to 104p.

Top price per head was £950 for a suckler from Whamtown, others sold to £845.25 and £798.25 from Lynnshield. Dairy cows topped at £818.55 and £795.60 from Roanstree, others to £754 from Hethermill.

A much larger show of 4,756 prime lambs were forward to a full ring of buyers who were a lot more active than the previous week. A good show for quality saw trade firmer in most classes apart from 44-47 kilo lambs unless of best quality. Over 50 kilo lambs sharper on the week and keenly sought after. Lightweight lambs remain on a par with store trade. Overall average of 144.9p (SQQ 148.2p). Top price of £86 per head for Texels from Kirk House and to 203p per kilo for Beltex from Waltonwoodhead.
