Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 30 cattle, 4,044 prime lambs and 6,265 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th August 2016.
A small entry of clean cattle due to the six-day standstill after Tuesdays store sale saw all types sell well.
OTM: Entry dominated by hillbred sucklers. 1st Langholm, 2nd Berryscaur.
Another excellent entry of 30 head were on offered to a full ring of buyers, with extra grazing men in attendance. Trade was animated throughout with demand outstripping supply. Messrs Elliot of Burnfoot of Ewes topped the sale at 132p with a Salers. Peter Dayson sold an Angus to 129p, and Galloways from a long distant vendor William Taverner receiving 110p. Continentals sold to 123p for a Limousin x from Elaine Wilkie and 119p from Messrs Lawson. Non Fabbl cows realised 122p from GB Forster. Top price per head was £1053.15 from the Lawson twins, New House, who sold another to £961.70.
A small entry of dairy cows topped at 111p from John Huddleston for a Black & White, Dairy Shorthorns to 109p from The Green.

4,044 prime lambs were another good show, usual buyers to the fore. Trade for lambs 39kg upwards were a very good to sell with handy weight and plainer meat harder to cash. Overall average was 182ppk. Sale topped at £100 for Texels from Greenbrae and 234p for Texels from Midtown and Beltex from Byers Farm. Hill lambs sold to £80 per head for Greyface from Whiteside and 210p per kilo for lightweight Texels from Boldron.

Over 6,265 cast ewes and rams attracted a large ring of buyers. Trade was very much on par with recent week’s sales, although heavy, over fat ewes were slightly cheaper on the week. Sale topped at £148 for Texel rams from Thornington and £144 for Texel ewes from Beckfoot.
