Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 cattle, 3,909 prime lambs and 6,122 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd November 2016.
The weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 34 OTM’s were forward. An extremely mixed entry of cows with over 65% of the entry hill Galloways, these were on offer to the usual good company of buyers, with several new faces looking for feeders present. All types were freely bid for but trade was to be quoted easier on the week. Galloways sold to 101p from Tom and Sean Barker, others sold to 97p for the last Galloway from Dodgsonstown. The highlight of the day was a load of Continental x cows from Nigel Mitchinson, which topped the sale at 117p for a Limousin x. Black and Whites sold to 108p from Neil the absent golfer. Aged Highland cows sold to 71p from Mr Morrison-Bell. Top price per head was £783.90 for a black cow from Gallowberry. Black and Whites topped at £642.60 from Harelaw. Cull bulls were mixed with Black and whites selling at 99p from Harelawhole. Farmers: There were 9 buyers operating today at ringside and more cows are regularly needed to supply buyer demand.
A smaller show of 3,909 lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade similar on the week apart from heavyweight lambs, where £80-83 would stop most, especially if too fat. Best quality lambs and export weight lambs could have been a touch sharper on the week, with middle weights 45-48kg easier to sell. Lightweight lambs remain similar, unless short of flesh, where only store trade was realised.
Sale topped at 229p for Beltex from Sorbie, and £100 for Beltex from Bridgestone and Texels from Smyllum. Sale averaged 164.7p (SQQ 167.8ppk)

A larger show 6,122 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with more heavy ewes on offer, trade remained brisk for best selling continental ewes apart from if over fat. Mule ewes £2-3 easier on the week, with hill ewes similar although far fewer plain ewes on offer. Rams remain dear and short of requirements. Sale topped at £154 for Charolais rams from Beckfoot and ewes topped at £151 for Texels from Orchardton Mains.
