Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,318 sheep comprising of 2,254 prime hoggs, 96 prime lambs and 968 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th May 2020.

A larger show of cast cows again sold to an increased ring of buyers, ensuring all classes met a flying trade with more required on a weekly basis. Top price per head of £900 for an Angus cow shown by JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick, who also sold Shorthorns at £832. Other Shorthorn cows sold to £810 from R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg, Bewcastle. Shorthorn heifers sold at 171p and 170p from Waterhead of Dryfe, Lockerbie, with cows to 128p Pilmuir and 122p Solwaybank. Angus cows sold to 125p from Pilmuir with Blue Greys selling at 112p from Cadgillhead.

A larger entry of prime hoggs forward. Well finished hoggs sold to a premium whilst lean hoggs proved harder to cash.

The sale topped at 291p for a penful of Beltex hoggs from S McKie, Finniness, Kirkcudbright with top price per head of £140 for Texel hoggs shown by R Osborne, Castlehill, Dumfries.  

Overall average 215.7p (SQQ 221.0p).

A tidy offering of spring lambs were forward sold an very well topping at 295p for Texel lambs consigned by GT Beattie, Guardsmill, Gretna and from R Johnston, Kimmeter Green, Annan. Top price per head of £128 again for a fantastic pen of Texel bred lambs also from Kimmeter Green. Overall average 249.3p (SQQ 271.6p)

Topping the sale at £199 for Texel ewes consigned by R Osborne, Castlehill, Dumfries with hill ewes selling at £88 for Cheviot ewes from W Wilson & Co., Geltsdale, Castle Carrock.  

Rams sold to £140 for Texels from A Miller & Sons, Aimster, Thurso and for Suffolks from H Martindale, The Land, Ecclefechan.
