Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,339 sheep comprising of 5,014 prime hoggs and 3,325 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 24th March 2022.

An offering consisting of mainly hill cows again; with the majority also non-farm assured, nevertheless a competitive trade throughout. More numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £992 and 155p from A Roskell & Partners, Laverhay, Moffat.  

A smaller show of 5,014 prime hoggs were forward, a very mixed show of hoggs forward selling to much improved rates on the week. Well finished lightweight hoggs (30kg – 37kg) were an electric trade being well short of purchaser requirements. Export hoggs also sold to high rates of returns and again short of purchaser requirements. Many more fed inspec hoggs are required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 371p from G Mitchinson & Sons, High Greenhill, Kirkcambeck.  

Top price per head of £170 for Texel hoggs from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.   

An overall sale average of 259.8ppk (SQQ 269.2pk) was achieved.

A similar show of 3,325 ewes were forward, trade simply had to be seen to be believed being £10-£12 up on the week. Three unliftable pure bred Texel ewes breaking over £300 to a top of £305 for Texels shown by Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns, and £302 x 2 consigned from Messrs T Holmes, Nutholm Farm, Lockerbie, with a further 152 ewes selling at £200 and over.

Suffolk ewes were a monstrous trade topping at a whopping £234 from J&E Matheson, Achvaich, Sutherland, with a pen of 16 pure Suffolk ewes selling at £228 from HM Martindale, The Land, Ecclefechan, while Suffolk cross ewes were very good to sell with any number of pens selling £165-£185.   

Mule ewes sold well, lacking in weight but still topped at £155 from A&T Wilson, Baryerrock, Wigtown. Countless pens of medium Mules selling to over £140.

Hill ewes were again dearer on the week being a phenomenal trade topping at £131 for Cheviot ewes from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.

Rams were on fire. Topping at an eye watering £262 for Texels from A Clark & Son, West Glengyre, Leswalt. With a total of 212 rams levelling at £136.35

All quantities of ewes are required for this week’s sale as the ewe trade is set to hold firm at these extreme rates of return and more ewes can be sold on a weekly basis to vendor’s advantage.
