Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,617 comprising of 4,745 prime lambs and 3,872 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 21st December 2023.

A mixed show of cast cows were forward, trade similar. The sale topped at 191p per kilo for Angus cows from G & J Archibald, Craigens, Isle of Islay, which also achieved top per head of £1,548. Beef Shorthorns sold to £1,519 from TRL Ltd, Shawhill, Annan.

A smaller show of 4,745 lambs was forward to an increased ring of 15 purchasers ensuring all well fed and properly finished lambs were markedly dearer on the week whilst lean grass fed lambs proved hard to place. Averages well up on the week being well in front of earlier in the week.

The primestock sale here at Longtown will be conducted as per usual next week with a bumper entry of stock forecast and a trade to match. Next Thursday will be the week to market stock and numbers can be handled with ease.

The sale topped at 388p for Beltex lambs from M/s Hamilton, Fernhead Farms.

Texel lambs sold to £190 for Texels from A Reid & Co., Glendearg, Eskdalemuir, who’s run 196 mainly Cheviot and Blackface, very well finished, lambs averaged 50kg and a staggering £153.

M/s Mactaggart, Main Office brought forward a fantastic run of Cheviot and Texel lambs, expertly finished, to top at £159 and average 46kg and 303ppk.  

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A smaller show of 3,872 ewes was forward to a full ring of 19 active purchasers ensuring all classes maintained last weeks high rates of return being easily the most competitive cast ewe ring in the country. Many more ewes can be sold to vendor advantage and are required on a weekly basis.  

Texel ewes topped the sale for the second week on the bounce consigned by W & C Ingram, Logie Dunro realising £320, who also had other pens breaking over £300, and their tremendous run of 50 pure bred texel ewes averaged an eye watering £261.68.  Many more required on a weekly basis to supply an unprecedented demand at Longtown.

Beltex Ewes topped at £228 for a pen of 8 handy weight, seriously shapey ladies consigned by M/s Musgrave, Cardewlees, who’s run of 22 Beltex ewes averaged £202.

Mule ewes sold to a more animated trade topping at £122 consigned by expert finished Mr D McGregor, Longrigg.

Hill ewes topped at £114 for Cheviots from WL Spalding & Sons, Balconnel, Menmuir.   

Rams met some resistance as more become readily available selling to a top of £160 for Texels from H & M Connell, Minsca, Waterbeck.
