Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,176 comprising of 6,009 prime lambs and 4,167 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 28th December 2023.
A much larger show of 6,009 lambs were forward, where a fantastic show of fed commercial lambs graced the ring at Longtown Auction, selling to dearest trade of the season by a stretch. The prices speak for themselves as returns are unrivalled by any other outlet with all classes in serious demand achieving an overall average of 299ppk.
Topping the sale per head was £205 for Charollais from A Hoggan, Maryholm, Dumfries, with a good run of well finished lambs from this same good home going on to average £158 and 308ppk.
Per kilo the sale topped at 360p for Beltex lambs from J & AM Moralee, Hardriding, Bardon Mill.
Another outstanding run 125 of predominantly Cheviot lambs consigned by A Reid & Co., Glendearg sold to a blistering trade topping at £147 and averaging 312ppk.
Messrs Martindale, The Land brought a run of 175 very well finished 50kg Texel and Suffolk lambs averaging over £150 and 300ppk, topping at £159.
Messrs JW Vevers, High Stenries again brought a serious run of fed Texel and Continental lambs to Longtown averaging 48kg and 312ppk.
Hoggs will continue to be wanted into the New Year and numbers can be sold through Longtown to vendor advantage.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A larger show of 4,167 ewes were forward. Ewes maintained last week’s rates of return right across the board. Best ewes and heavy ewes in big demand also plain ewes sold to a good end.
Topping the sale was a pair of unbelievable Texel ewes consigned by Messrs McKay, High Dyke farm realising £285.
Messrs Wales, Thackwood sold a fantastic run of Charolais bred ewes topping at £240 and averaging over £200.
Hill ewes sold well with Cheviot ewes in good demand topping at £104 and the strongest Blackies £85+
Mule ewes saw a £8-£10 increase and proved better to sell.
Rams to £180 for a Bluefaced Leicester from WS Robson & Co., Yatesfield, Otterburn and for Texels from S & SL Phillips, Netherhill, Roadhead.
An active ring of 19 purchasers operating on over 70 accounts ensured all classes were competitively bid for with some purchasers leaving empty handed. More ewes and prime hoggs are wanted to satisfy an ever-growing purchaser demand.
